What is DTF Printing?
Direct to Film (DTF) printing is a recently developed heat transfer printing technology in the garment and textile printing industry. It involves printing custom designs or images directly onto a specialized film, which is then transferred onto the fabric or surface using a heat press.
One of the main benefits of DTF printing is its versatility. The colour printing on DTF transfer film can be transferred on to a wide range of materials, including cotton, polyester, blends, canvas, leather, and more. The adhesive powder used in DTF printing is designed to bond with the surface of the material, creating a durable and long-lasting image that won’t crack or peel over time. DTF printing offers a flexible and customizable option for printing on different materials, making it a popular choice for customizing clothing, T-shirt, tote bags, hats, workwear, uniforms and other products.
DTF printing has made significant progress in recent years, with improvements in ink formulation and printing technology resulting in higher quality prints with greater durability. With our 7-color DTF printer, we can achieve high-quality, vibrant printing. The additional color options allow for finer details and smoother gradients, resulting in a more realistic and vivid print. The color gamut is also increased, allowing for a wider range of colors to be reproduced with accuracy.
Our DTF printing process allows for high-resolution printing up to 2880 dpi, resulting in sharp and detailed images. This level of detail is especially important for designs with intricate patterns or small text which will be transferred on to T shirt or uniforms etc.
Our equipment
We have many advanced technology equipment to create vibrant, high-quality prints with excellent color accuracy and all the heat transfer films we print are Highly durable, stretch and wash resistant, no fading, cracking or peeling.
7 colour DTF printer
Our DTF printer use 7 ink colour system (CMYK+LM+LC+W),
• Cyan (C)
• Magenta (M)
• Yellow (Y)
• Key (K)
• Light Cyan (LC)
• Light Magenta (LM)
• White (W)
which allows us to create vibrant, high-quality prints with excellent color accuracy. The printer uses special DTF inks that are designed to bond with the adhesive layer and transfer film, ensuring that the print stays vibrant and durable over time.
Auto Shacking adhesive powder and conveyor tunnel drying machine
After the print is finished, special designed DTF adhesive powder is added to the surface of the ink while it is still wet. The transfer film is then passed through a conveyor tunnel drying system, which heats the film and melts the adhesive powder, securing the bond above the ink at the back side of the transfer film. The result is a high-quality print that is ready to be applied to the desired product. The auto shacking feature ensures that the adhesive powder is evenly distributed, resulting in consistent and high-quality prints every time.
DTF Printing Process
- Design Preparation and prepress: The first step in DTF printing is preparing the design to be printed on the transfer film. The design can be created using graphic design software, or it can be a pre-existing image that is scanned or uploaded.
- Printing: Once the design is ready, it is printed onto the DTF transfer film using a DTF printer. The printer lays down the special DTF ink onto the film in the shape of the design.
- Adhesive Powder Application: While the DTF ink is still wet on the transfer film, a layer of adhesive powder is applied using a shacking powder machine. The adhesive powder sticks to the ink, creating a bond that will later be transferred to the garment.
- Drying: After the adhesive powder has been applied, the transfer film is then placed into a tunnel dryer. The heat from the dryer melts the adhesive powder, which bonds to the ink, creating a durable and long-lasting transfer.
- Transfer: The transfer film is then placed onto the garment, and heat is applied using a heat press machine. The heat and pressure from the machine cause the transfer film to bond with the garment’s fabric, effectively transferring the design from the transfer film onto the garment.
- Peeling: After the transfer has been made, the transfer film is peeled off the garment, leaving behind the design.
Overall, the DTF printing process results in high-quality, vibrant prints that are durable and long-lasting. The adhesive powder and melting process ensure that the design is securely bonded to the garment, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including textile and garment printing, like T shirts, uniforms, workwear, caps, tote bags etc.
DTF Printing vs Screen Printing
DTF printing offers more versatility, faster turnaround, and better quality prints than screen printing, especially for small runs and complex designs.
1. MOQ:
DTF printing has not Minimum Order Quantity limit. It can handle small quantity orders, even as low as one piece, whereas screen printing is not cost-effective for small runs due to the complex set-up process involved.
2. Print Quality-Color:
DTF printing is better for printing multiple colors, gradients, and rich images, while screen printing is better suited for a few solid colors..
3. Print Quality-Details:
DTF printing can achieve a higher level of detail than screen printing because it is a digital printing process. With screen printing, the level of detail is limited by the mesh size of the screen used to apply the ink. DTF printing can produce very fine details and small text, which may not be achievable with screen printing.
4. Size:
DTF printing is not limited by frame size, while screen printing is limited by the size of the screen frame.
5. Touch and feel:
DTF printing uses water-based pigment ink which results in a very soft touch and feel of the garment compared to screen printing which uses thicker inks like plastisol or water-based paint.
6. Durability:
DTF printing is more durable than screen printing due to the adhesive powder used, which creates a strong bond between the ink and the transfer film, resulting in no cracking or peeling, and more flexibility.
7. Turnaround Time:
Because there are only fewer steps involved in the process, DTF printing is a quicker process compared to screen printing as it eliminates the need for film, exposure, screen making and drying process. And there for screen printing each color requires a separate screen and printing pass, which can add time to the process.
8. Cost:
DTF printing can be more cost-effective than screen printing for small orders because there are no screen set-up costs. For customized and personalized design DTF printing is a good choice. However, for larger orders, and simple colours, screen printing may be more cost-effective due to economies of scale.
DTF Printing vs Colour Vinyl heat transfer printing
Vinyl Heat Transfer Printing is a method of printing graphics onto various materials such as fabrics, bags, hats, and other items using heat transfer vinyl (HTV). The process involves digital printing on heat transfer vinyl media, cutting it out on the HTV material using a vinyl cutter or plotter, weeding the excess vinyl away from the design, and then transferring the design onto the desired surface using a heat press. The heat press applies heat and pressure to the HTV, causing it to adhere to the material and creating a permanent bond. Vinyl Heat Transfer Printing is popular for personalizing items such as t-shirts, sports jerseys, and hats, as well as for creating promotional products and marketing materials. Compare to DTF printing it has below disadvantages.
1. Touch and feel:
DTF printing results in a soft touch and feel on the garment due to the thin layer of pigment ink and adhesive transfer. Vinyl Heat Transfer Printing (HTV) use thicker vinyl print media and ink, resulting in a less soft feel.
2. Details cutting and weeding:
DTF printing does not require cutting and weeding process, allowing for transparent details to be printed directly onto the garment. Vinyl Heat Transfer Printing requires cutting and weeding process, which can be challenging for fine details and small letters.
3. Turnaround time:
DTF printing does not require a cutting machine or weeding process, which can result in a quicker turnaround time compared to Vinyl Heat Transfer Printing.
4. Durability:
DTF printing uses an adhesive powder that can create a strong bond between the ink and the garment, resulting in a more durable print compared to Vinyl Heat Transfer Printing.
DTF Printing vs heat transfer Vinyl cutting
vinyl cutting transfer is a method of creating custom designs on fabrics or other materials using vinyl sheets and a cutting plotter. The vinyl sheets are loaded into the plotter, which uses a sharp blade to cut out the desired design from the vinyl. The excess vinyl is then weeded away, leaving only the design on a clear transfer tape. The transfer tape is then applied to the garment or material using a heat press, transferring the vinyl design onto the surface.
Vinyl cutting transfer is often used for creating simple designs with a limited number of colors, and it can be a cost-effective option for small orders. However, it can be more time-consuming than other printing methods and is not always suitable for more complex designs with intricate details.
DTF printing can do better than transfer Vinyl cutting.
1. Color Limit:
DTF printing allows for a wider range of colors and gradients, as it uses water-based pigment ink that can produce vibrant and complex color blends. On the other hand, vinyl cutting transfer is limited to a set number of colors and is better suited for simple designs with solid colors.
2. Printing Quality:
DTF printing produces high-quality prints with sharp details and a smooth finish. It can handle complex designs with fine lines and small text without compromising the quality of the print. Vinyl cutting transfer, on the other hand, can produce lower quality prints, especially when dealing with fine details or intricate designs.
3. Time Cost:
DTF printing is a faster method compared to vinyl cutting transfer, as it eliminates the need for cutting process and manual weeding. This makes it ideal for quick turnarounds and rush orders. Vinyl cutting transfer requires manual labor and can be time-consuming, especially for large orders.
4. Touch and Feel:
DTF printing produces a soft and flexible print that feels comfortable to the touch. It uses a thin layer of water-based pigment ink and adhesive powder that adheres to the fabric without adding any weight or stiffness. Vinyl cutting transfer, on the other hand, can produce a heavier and stiffer print that may not feel as comfortable on the fabric.
5. Durability:
DTF printing produces a highly durable print that can withstand multiple washes and wear without cracking or peeling off. The adhesive powder used in DTF printing provides extra strength and flexibility to the print, making it ideal for sportswear and other high-activity garments. Vinyl cutting transfer, however, may not be as durable and can peel off over time, especially when exposed to high temperatures or frequent washing.
DTF Printing vs Sublimation Printing
sublimation transfer printing is a method of printing designs onto a special transfer paper using sublimation ink, which is then heat transferred onto the surface of a substrate, such as fabric or coated metal, using a heat press. While sublimation printing has its advantages for certain applications, DTF printing offers more versatility, better color options, and faster production times, making it a popular choice for custom apparel and promotional products.
1. Material compatibility:
DTF printing can be done on a wider range of materials, including cotton and synthetic fabrics, whereas sublimation printing requires a polyester or polymer-coated substrate. This makes DTF printing a more versatile option for printing on various types of fabrics and materials.
2. Color limitations:
Sublimation printing is best suited for light-colored or white substrates, as the sublimation ink is translucent and does not show up well on dark colors. DTF printing, on the other hand, can be used on both light and dark colored garments, providing more color options for designs on dark colour T shirt printing or garment and uniform printing.
3. Durability:
Both DTF printing and sublimation printing offer excellent durability, with the ink penetrating the fibers of the fabric for long-lasting results. However, sublimation printing may fade over time with exposure to UV light, whereas DTF printing is more resistant to fading.
4. Detail and resolution:
DTF printing can achieve higher resolution and sharper details compared to sublimation printing, which can sometimes result in a slightly blurred or fuzzy image.
DTF Printing vs DTG Printing
DTG printing has been a popular choice for printing full-color designs directly onto garments using specialized inkjet printers. However, DTF printing, which uses a heat transfer process to apply designs, has several advantages over DTG printing. Why DTF Printing is a Better Choice?
1. Garment Compatibility:
Garment Compatibility: DTF printing can be applied to a wide range of garment types, including those with buttons and zippers, due to its heat transfer process after printing DTF film finished. This makes DTF printing a better choice for those who want to print on different types of garments. DTG printing, on the other hand, requires a flat surface to print on due to the limited space between printing platform and printhead, which means garments with buttons, zippers, and pockets cannot be printed.
2. Material Compatibility:
DTF printing can be applied to a variety of materials, including cotton, polyester, and blends, while DTG printing is designed primarily for 100% cotton garments. This gives DTF printing a wider range of material options to work with.
3. Size limit:
DTF printing can print designs in larger sizes and gang sheet printing can accommodate different shapes and sizes of design. DTG printing, on the other hand, is typically limited to A3-sized prints and flat surfaces.
4. Turnaround time:
DTF printing has a faster turnaround time compared to DTG printing because it doesn’t require the pre-treatment process that DTG printing requires. Additionally, DTF printing allows for multiple pictures and designs to be printed at once, while DTG printing is a slower, one-by-one printing process.
5. Cost:
DTF printing is generally less expensive than DTG printing, making it a more cost-effective option for those looking to print designs on garments.
What we can make with DTF printing transfer films?
DTF prints can be transferred onto a wide range of products including t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, aprons, caps, hats, bags, shoes, socks, workwear, uniforms, and many other textile and fabric materials. DTF printing is particularly popular for customizing and personalizing apparel and accessories for events, teams, businesses, and personal use, including workwear and uniforms.
